Frequently Asked Questions- What if we already have a tape backup system?
Using a tape backup system and
a remote data backup system offers the best of both worlds. Critical files,
like billing, customer contact files and databases can be kept on the online
backup system. While, the tape system can be used to create a full backup of
the entire system once or twice a month, instead of on a daily basis. Tapes
requires more maintenance. Our online backup system can provide a quick
and easy day to retrieve critical files and databases without the hassle of searching through tapes.
- Onsite, Offsite - What's The Difference?
Basically, online backups work like regular tape backups, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer being backed up, a remote backup sends encrypted file data over the internet to a computer file storage system safely off-site.This usually happens at night while your business is closed and nobody is using the computers. It's completely automatic. In fact, you may forget it's working every night.
- Why Are Online Backups Considered More Beneficial?
The data is immediately stored off-site using an automated back up system. Also, only an internet connection is needed. Completely eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment and media. And, since the system is automated, manual labor is eliminated.
- Is my data encrypted as it travels over the Internet?
Yes. All data is encrypted before it leaves your computer.
- What type of encryption is used?
All files are encrypted using 128 bit DES, 192 bit Triple-DES or 448 bit Blowfish encryption which is selected by the user with their own personal encryption code which is only known by the user of the system.
- What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. And the only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code.
-
How Secure is Data Vault's Online Backup System?
Data security is a major concern and we have
addressed the issue of protecting data by using a very sophisticated compression
and encryption system. Using two distinct layers of protection, each with its
own encryption technology, Data Vault's archives are virtually impenetrable.
Data Vault's Online Backup System compresses and
encrypts your data before transmitting it to our storage facility. Only
you, the client knows the encryption "key." The key is not transmitted the your
data. Your data cannot be viewed, decrypted, or used in any way without the key.
- What platforms does Data Vault support?
All versions of 32-bit Windows, including
Windows-95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, and XP. It works with all networks, including
Novell Netware and all Windows networks.
- Can I backup other platforms?
Data Vault's Client supports mapped network drives and the Network Neighborhood, it can backup data from any computer that is accessible via the network. A single Data Vault Client can backup the local computer and any number of local or remote network computers using our powerful user interface.
- What type of Internet connection is required?
Any type of connection, high speed LAN, Cable, DSL or dialup modem. The faster your connection, the better.
- How long does the backup take?
Depending on the speed of your connection and the size of your backup, your initial backup over the Internet will take the longest amount of time. After the initial
full backup, Incremental nightly backups are significantly smaller along with data compression resulting in a much more efficient and faster backup.
- Do I need to backup my entire computer?
In general, you can avoid backing up any programs that you can reinstall from a purchased CD, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.). Try to focus your selection on things like your "My Documents" folder and data files of your important programs like accounting, income tax, contact management, etc. Your online backup software comes with predefined filters, which allow you to automatically select categories of files without knowing where all the files are located.
- What happens if I exceed my quota?
If you exceed your quota, Data Vault's Online Backup system will not prevent your backups from continuing
your account will automatically be adjusted to the next storage level.
Likewise if your storage needs should decrease your account will be invoiced
at the lower level.
- Can I
use my computer while backing up?
Yes you can, Data Vault's Online Backup System runs in the background, and
will not interfere with other programs you are running.
- Should I also have a local backup in addition to my online backup?
It's up to you. We encourage people to do both local and remote backup for absolute protection. . Users that want an added level of protection will perform local backups in addition to their online backup. Local backups can allow you to backup ALL of your files, while the online backup is a great way to automatically store your critical files off-site. When it comes to your important data, you can never be too safe.
- Can I backup open and locked files with the online backup software?
In the case of many backup software programs, files and databases that are in use during the backup may not get backed up successfully because they are locked to prevent any other program from altering the data. To solve this problem, Data Vault's Online Backup can be used with the optional Open File Manager program to make sure that these open and locked files get backed up successfully.
- How many backups do you retain online?
By default we maintain 7 versions. We can customize your number of online backups to meet your company's needs.
- What happen if I get disconnected during the backup?
No Problem. If a current backup cannot be sent or is interrupted, the Backup client software will continue to retry until a connection can be re-established, it will pick up from where it was interrupted until the entire backup is complete.
- What do I do if I forget or lose my encryption password?
Lost passwords cannot be recovered.
